A Sweet Topsy-Turvy Life is inspired by my past, my present and what will happen in the future.
My writing journey is not that long. Creativity has always been in my blood, but my creativity was in drawing, painting, and craft work.I’ve always liked women’s fiction books, who couldn’t like Nicolas Spark’s novels? The Notebookwas especially emotional and amazing. Reading a women’s fiction novel and writing one was like oil and water- I never dreamed in a million years I would write one.
Just for fun and insight, I took a children's writing course about 14 years ago. I owned and operated a preschool, and that course was of interest to me. Little did I know that course was the beginning of my writing journey.
Fast forward 5 years, going for a different path in life was important to me at the time, so I started back to college. I was teaching English online to foreign students and felt I needed a Bachelors in English. Creative writing was included, and it sowed the seeds for my love of writing.
The first time I stood in front of a class of students, might I say much younger students, I was terrified that they would be snickering to themselves at what terrible writing it was. To my surprise, I got a lot of positive responses and reactions which helped bolster my confidence. At that point, I was mostly writing for class projects.
My book,Hummingbird Haven, started out as a short story in one of my Creative Writing classes. It was short- a mere two pages! I had added onto it a few times for other classes, but it had been hiding in files from long ago. I had taken a class that suggested we write down every time we had a thought or idea about something. I kept a small journal by my bed finding myself waking in the middle of the night with great images about this trip with my daughter and what I had experienced. I frantically searched for those few beginning pages of Hummingbird Haven, brought them out of the cobwebs and began writing again. Writing this story actually helped me heal from wounds I suffered. It was many years in the making, but it made it to publication. Whew!!

Lainey Cameron, a wonderful author of The Exit Strategy, said that writing her first book was “Scarier than riding a a blow-up banana boat through a storm in Croatia.” However, she did it knowing she wasn’t skilled enough, industry savvy enough or know where the story would end. I felt the same way, but it became something that I needed for myself at the time even if it never came out to the public.
This glorious journey of writing has been daunting, exhilarating, frustrating, rewarding, and any other adjective you can think of.It is amazing how I feel now about writing. Don't get me wrong, it's still challenging but I have a purpose. That purpose makes me want to write, write and write more. If I can reach one person and help them, entertain them or make their day better, I am happy. My book, Hummingbird Haven, has done that for many people already and that warms my soul.

The future- based on my Crystal ball- just kidding. The future of A Sweet Topsy-Turvy Life is filled with blogs every week that readers of women’s fiction would enjoy. That encompasses a wide variety of topics. Please let me know what you would like to read about. I will be putting more short stories, poems, food for thought, and more on my website. I will be giving special insight on what’s to come in the sequel of Hummingbird Haven. Be looking for that soon.
